WAUW DESIGN IS A SMALL BUT UNIQUE LABORATORY, MASTERING IN THE ART OF CERAMICS WHICH IS LOCATED IN THE HISTORIC DISTRICT OF ØSTERBRO, COPENHAGEN.
The owner, Sussi, is a master ceramist and all her creations are designed, and hand crafted within her whimsical small workshop-shop.
“In my workshop in Østerbro, I design, develop and manufacture all my products. My inspiration comes mainly from the landscape and nature. Probably because I raised my children near the South Funen moraine landscape, and lived near the South Funen archipelago, spending my days in an environment that combines land and water. The materials I work with, and my inspiration originally come from the same place. When the objects come out of the oven, it is like a circle that closes.”
Sussi has developed several lines of distinctive and exclusive ceramic pieces over the years. Here at Nordisk Design, we have selected two of our favourites! the Pastel line and the Tone line.
MINIMALISTIC DESIGN, STUNNING TECHNIQUE, HANDCRAFTED MASTERPIECES NORDIC BEAUTY
Pastello is a distinctive line where an encounter between two glazes, a beautiful third is born. The surface and tactility are a supporting element of the line. The lower enamel of the product, the parrt of the product that is handled, is opaque and has minimalistic yet lavish structure, while the upper part is distinctively shiny and smooth, specially designed for the delicate encounter with the lips. The interaction and overlap between the two glazes generate a third and create ‘landscape motifs’. The superimposition of the two glazes outlines a chromatic line reminiscent of a horizon.
Pastel cups and bowls are among WAUW characteristic designs and are the most popular products. They are all handcrafted in the Østerbro workshop in Copenhagen. The ceramic cups are designed to have no handles, however cleverly constructed the enamel ensures they are most comfortable to hold.
With the beautiful Tone line, colours are returned to the forefront to the table. Colours that visually enhance the food to which they are complemented with. The Tone series is a stoneware series with a special tactile surface, reminiscent to the soft touch of silk. The gorgeous solid colour glazes are vibrant, creating various shades on the solid colour surface. Each unique colour has different shades and recalls poetic shadow landscapes. The tactility of glaze is conceived as a counterpoint to stoneware. Stoneware has a special “stone sound” and can feel quite hard, and perhaps even rough. However, the stunning Tone line are cleverly designed to be a subtle and delicate bezel product whilst being robust, durable and not brittle.
